Competition rules

Theses defended during the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 academic years at any public or private university in Poland or abroad may be submitted to the competition. Theses that participated in previous editions may not be submitted again.

Topics recommended by the Mayor of Bolesławiec should focus on issues related to increasing the competitiveness of the city of Bolesławiec on the domestic and foreign markets and should be connected with the implementation of development plans adopted by the authorities of Bolesławiec.

Thesis submission procedure:

Each higher-education institution may submit any number of master's or doctoral theses that the dean of the relevant faculty considers creative, innovative and deserving of wide dissemination. One supervisor may submit only one thesis to the competition through a school/university. Theses that participated in previous editions may not be submitted.

Theses should be delivered to the Bolesławiec City Hall, 59-700 Bolesławiec, Ratusz-Rynek 41:

  • in person
  • or by post by 16 December 2016 (for submissions sent by post, the date of the postmark shall determine compliance).

Please write the following on the envelope:

COMPETITION FOR THE BEST MASTER'S OR DOCTORAL THESIS.

The written application to participate in the competition should include:

  • one hard copy of the thesis
  • an electronic version of the submitted thesis (e.g. on CD or DVD)
  • confirmation of the thesis defense issued by the university authorities
  • the supervisor's review and assessment of the thesis
  • a completed application form (the template is available at www.boleslawiec.eu)
  • a one-page summary of the thesis
  • a statement by the thesis author accepting the competition conditions set out in the regulations and consenting to publication of the thesis by the Bolesławiec City Hall or its organizational units, following editorial revision
  • a statement by the thesis author consenting to the wide dissemination of the thesis
  • in the case of higher-education diplomas (master's degrees) obtained abroad, confirmation in accordance with the procedure specified in Article 191a of the Act of 27 July 2005 on Higher Education (Journal of Laws of 2012, item 572, as amended)
  • in the case of doctoral theses defended abroad, confirmation in accordance with the procedure specified in Article 24 of the Act of 14 March 2003 on Academic Degrees and Titles and Degrees and Titles in the Arts (Journal of Laws of 2014, item 1852, as amended).

All documents, including the submitted theses, must be written or translated into Polish. The Mayor of Bolesławiec appoints the competition panel. Members of the panel may not be supervisors of submitted theses.

The competition will be held if at least three theses meeting the formal requirements are submitted.

If fewer than three theses are submitted, the Mayor reserves the right to withdraw from the competition or extend the submission period for the tenth edition until 15 December 2017 and expand the group of persons eligible to submit theses to include those who defended their theses in the 2016/2017 academic year.

The decision on whether the competition will be held, withdrawn or extended will be published on the Bolesławiec City Hall websites.

Competition decision and prizes

The competition panel, represented by the following representatives, will select the winner or winners:

  • academic and teaching staff of universities (3 people)
  • Bolesławiec City Hall (2 people).

The secretary of the competition panel will be a representative of the Bolesławiec City Hall who is not a member of the panel. The panel selects the winner or winners by a majority vote. The winners will receive diplomas and cash prizes:

  • First prize: PLN 3,000 (three thousand zlotys)
  • Second prize: PLN 2,000 (two thousand zlotys)
  • Third prize: PLN 1,000 (one thousand zlotys).

Supervisors of the awarded theses will receive diplomas and cash prizes of PLN 1,000 net. Award-winning competition theses may be published at the expense of the Bolesławiec City Hall or the organizational units of the Bolesławiec Municipal Commune and widely disseminated. Universities represented by the competition winners will receive preference when applying for the opportunity to arrange student internships at the Bolesławiec City Hall.

The competition results will be announced by 31 January 2017. If the submission period is extended as part of the tenth edition, the results will be announced by 31 January 2018.
