The event’s organiser, the parish of St John the Baptist in Zgorzelec, supported by the parish of St Wenceslas in Görlitz, together with the Mayor of Zgorzelec, who is the event’s patron, once again invite residents of both cities and the surrounding area to sing Christmas carols together and take part in the largest street Nativity play.
This time, our colourful Procession will travel from East to West, setting off punctually at 1:00 p.m. from the square in front of the Municipal Cultural Centre and heading towards Lower Market Square in Görlitz. It will be enlivened by biblical scenes prepared and performed by children and young people, referring to the story of the Nativity. The final scene, The Adoration of the Three Kings, will take place by Görlitz Town Hall, bringing this year’s journey to an end—but not the celebrations. After the procession, visitors will be able to refresh themselves with szczodraki pastries and hot tea at stalls set up in the Market Square. This year, proceeds from the sale of traditional baked goods, hot drinks and procession souvenirs will support the organisational budget of World Youth Day, which Poland will host from July.
Since the first edition, the January event has been attended primarily by residents of the city and municipality of Zgorzelec and our German neighbours from Görlitz, whose numbers grow every year, even though Three Kings’ Day is not a public holiday in Germany. In addition, as in previous years, our international Procession will also be attended by the Apostolic Nuncio in Görlitz, Polish and German clergy, representatives of Polish and German local authorities, and councillors.
And, of course, the reliable Representative Orchestra of the Turów Brown Coal Mine and the wonderful animals from Nasze Zoo, thanks to whom the Three Kings Procession will have a truly royal setting.
The Polish-German edition of the Procession is held under the patronage of the Bishop of Görlitz, the Mayor of Zgorzelec, the Lord Mayor of Görlitz, the Head of Zgorzelec Municipality and the Zgorzelec County Governor.
