How can we encourage a young viewer to discuss a cartoon and the important topics it addresses? Grażyna Hanaf, a lecturer with Nowe Horyzonty Edukacji Filmowej, came up with the idea of presenting cartoons together with props. She uses a garden gnome, who teases the first-graders and constantly has to be admonished, and a plush horse, who loves preschoolers and helps them understand what the cartoon is about. The idea of making the lectures more appealing and reaching young children was suggested to her by Małgorzata Biniek, who is responsible for promotion at BOK-MCC.
How Preschool No. 3 (branch) Explores the Topic of “Friendship” with the Middle Group
The topic was explored during classes at the preschool over two days. As part of the Nowe Horyzonty Edukacji Filmowej project, we went to Kino Forum to watch a selection of short cartoons about friendship. At the cinema, Grażyna Hanaf welcomed us with her friend, a plush horse, and talked about what friendship is. Then we watched four films, which we enjoyed very much.
After returning to the preschool, we talked about friendship, also referring to the films. We played integration games called “The Friendship Chair” and “I Really Like You.” We took hearts from the Magic Chest of Kind Words, exchanged them while saying kind things to one another, and arranged them to create a Friendship Tree. During the Wandering Hearts game, we smiled at our friend and touched them with a heart according to the teacher’s instructions.
At the end, we sang the song “My Round Little Face,” illustrating its words with hearts, and the song “My Little Friend,” pretending to play various instruments. We also drew ourselves and our friends with pastels and decorated the frames with colorful geometric shapes.
Now we know that:
The best friend is the one
who, without asking why you are sad,
can make sure that joy returns
