97 years ago, precisely on 11 November 1918, Poland regained its independence. On this occasion, and to mark Independence Day, we have our warmest wishes and an invitation for all of you.

We wish you—and ourselves as well—that we may always be proud of our homeland, and that we Poles may always be one great, good and wise family. We would also like to invite you to “Singing Together for Independence”. Let us all meet on 11 November at 4:30 p.m. beneath the green dome of the Municipal Cultural Centre in Zgorzelec and sing… “The Lancers Came Beneath the Window,” “The First Brigade,” and “O My Rosemary, Bloom and Grow.” We extend this invitation on our own behalf, on behalf of the Mayor of Zgorzelec, and on behalf of the students and teachers of the Feliks Nowomiejski State Music School of the First and Second Degree in Zgorzelec.

The Independence Day celebrations will be the central theme around which other important and interesting cultural events will also unfold, and we invite you to attend them at MDK Zgorzelec.

Let us traditionally begin with the cinema, where this week (Monday and Tuesday) you can watch “Agnieszka”, a film story about a girl named Agnieszka, who goes to prison in place of her boyfriend. When she is released, she leaves her home town. She boards the first bus available, which takes her to Munich, where she tries to put her life in order by working as a dominatrix at a luxury escort agency. Screenings at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost PLN 11.

This week at our PozaNova cinema also offers an exceptional opportunity to meet Lech Majewski, a film and theatre director, writer and painter, regarded as one of the small group of the most important and outstanding contemporary Polish artists. It is worth noting the date and making time to come to the Municipal Cultural Centre in Zgorzelec that day. SATURDAY, 14 NOVEMBER, 5:01 P.M. ADMISSION FREE!

The meeting will be accompanied by the opening of a film-poster exhibition and a screening of the film “The Mill and the Cross,” directed by L. Majewski. After the screening, we invite you to a discussion with the creator.

We warmly invite you to join us on Tuesday as well. At 5 p.m., there will be another edition of the ceremonial awards ceremony, during which Zgorzelec Mayor Rafał Gronicz will award scholarships to the best students from Zgorzelec, distinguished in science, culture and sport.

Also on Tuesday, a press conference of representatives of the Legnica Special Economic Zone is to be held under our modest roof. As we do not have the programme, we can only assume that it concerns the inclusion of investment areas in Zgorzelec in the zone.

Wednesday is Independence Day, which we have already mentioned here, so let us jump straight to Thursday. And once again, we warmly encourage you to join us. At 6:30 p.m. we invite you to what promises to be an exceptionally delicious concert by Ewa Uryga and the New York Jazz Collective. The concert programme will be devoted to the work of one of the greatest vocalists in the history of jazz music—Ella Fitzgerald. The audience will have the opportunity to hear standards from the album “Ballads for Ella,” recorded by Ewa Uryga and Marek Soskin in New York in 1999. Advance tickets cost PLN 50; on the day of the concert, PLN 60.

We have already mentioned Saturday and the meeting with Lech Majewski, so we skip ahead to Sunday and invite entire families. At 4 p.m., the Children’s Fairy-Tale Theatre will perform on the MDK stage, presenting the play “The Box,” directed by Dorota Baranowska. Tickets are only PLN 10. It is worth it.

Come along!
