The incident occurred on November 3 at around 1:45 p.m., at the intersection of Klonowica and 1 Maja streets. While reversing, the driver of a Renault delivery van failed to exercise due caution and hit a married couple walking behind his vehicle. The woman and the man (aged 80) fell, and the driver continued reversing, as a result of which one of the rear wheels ran over the woman’s legs.
City guards patrolling 1 Maja Street noticed the incident, ran over to the driver and ordered him to stop the vehicle. They immediately provided first aid to the elderly woman and called an ambulance and the police to the scene. The injured man got up unaided. The ambulance took the couple to hospital.
The 31-year-old bus driver stated that he had not seen the pedestrians, nor had he felt the moment he hit them or ran over the woman’s legs.
The incident took place in an area marked with a “residential zone” sign, where pedestrians may move freely throughout the entire space made available for public use and have priority over vehicles (the driver must yield to pedestrians in every case).
The police are conducting further proceedings in the matter.
