They help tourists stay on the trails primarily in winter, when there is fog or when the trails are covered by drifting snow. In total, approximately 40 kilometres of hiking trails in our mountains are marked with poles. There are more than 116 kilometres of trails in all.
Michał Makowski of Karkonosze National Park says that KPN employees, meanwhile, will wait until the last possible moment before dismantling barriers and signs on the summer hiking trails. These include the red trail above Wielki Staw and Mały Staw and the viewpoints above Śnieżne Kotły.
The safety features are removed because snow cornices destroyed them almost every year in the past. The trails also take a different route in winter.
