Maciej wrote “People of goodwill, let’s help Mrs. Ewa!”:
Mrs. Ewa, the mother of two daughters aged 8 and 9, suffers from chorea, a systemic connective tissue disease, atrophic gastritis, thoracic scoliosis and generalized lymphadenopathy. Mrs. Ewa’s life changed five years ago, when she learned about her illnesses. Currently, Mrs. Ewa’s husband works at one of the hypermarkets in Bolesławiec, while she receives a disability pension. Their financial situation does not allow them to live with dignity and make ends meet. Medicines, trips to specialist clinics and hospitals, necessary for Ewa’s life and reasonably efficient functioning, are very expensive and often force this family to make a dramatic choice: the mother’s treatment or bills and other payments.
The family tries not to go into debt and pays as much as it can afford each month. However, they do not always manage to get back on their feet. For example, the last two gas-heating bills drove them into considerable debt. I quote Mrs. Ewa’s words: “It makes you want to cry that we don’t have enough to survive the month.” Recently, Mrs. Ewa’s wheelchair broke down. This is another worry, as it is essential for her daily functioning and for visits to clinics and hospitals. Her next appointment is scheduled for July 8, and as of today Ewa has no means of getting around. This is a difficult situation for the sick woman, because sometimes she can barely make it to the bathroom under her own power, let alone travel to Wrocław.
During frequent chorea attacks, Ewa is taken by ambulance to the hospital emergency department, where she is released home after four hours because, apart from immediate medical care, the doctors are unable to provide any other assistance. The husband of the seriously and chronically ill Ewa has back problems. He is a caring person who devotes himself to his family. After work, he does a great deal at home himself, wanting to spare his wife pain from greater physical exertion. As Ewa said, “I would like to help him somehow, to relieve him a little. To give my beloved daughters a carefree childhood…”
Mrs. Ewa is therefore appealing for help to people of goodwill who have HEARTS!!! An important day lies ahead for this family: on July 4 at 4:00 p.m., a priest will administer the sacrament of marriage to them at the Bolesławiec Marian Basilica, and their daughters will be baptized. Paweł Saja, a well-known stylist from the Matrix Hair Salon in Bolesławiec, will style the bride’s hair for free. Families from the Domestic Church community (Bolesławiec region) will help organize a modest but festive wedding reception at the home of Mrs. Ewa’s friend.
