This year’s May picnic returns after a break to the Rev. Jerzy Popiełuszko Square, where the fountain has already been turned on and municipal deckchairs have been set up. Everyone who decides to spend the May Day weekend in the city can look forward to artistic performances from 3 p.m., including shows by children from Zgorzelec preschools, a performance by Kwiatowianki and a concert of easy-listening music performed by the Tia Maria group. There will also be a “Polish Feast” parade by the Frant Theatre and the now-traditional pot of delicious pea soup, served by the mayor and the Culinary Theatre. The food corner run by Bazylia restaurant will offer grilled dishes, and there will be a bonfire where everyone can roast whatever they bring. There will also be a competition for the most interesting picnic table setting, games and activities prepared by Zgorzelec seniors, as well as promotional stands by the police, the Senior Citizens’ Club and the library!
Flag Day and Constitution Day on 3 May
The second of May is also one of Poland’s youngest national holidays—Flag Day of the Republic of Poland. As in previous years, anyone who does not yet have this important symbol of national identity will be able to receive one from the mayor during the picnic. On Saturday, from 4:30 p.m., residents of Zgorzelec will be able to collect one of 500 flags—national, city and European Union flags—from the head of our city. We hope they will decorate their homes with them so that the following day, when we commemorate another anniversary of the very important event in our history that was the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May, our city will look truly festive. This will certainly be appreciated by those who attend the Mass for the Homeland on Sunday, traditionally celebrated at St. Boniface Church at 11 a.m. An hour later, a short civic patriotic ceremony will be held at the Millennium Monument.
