We were asked to publicize the matter by our Reader, who wrote to us:
Please look into the park on Ogrodowa Street. The woman in the photo, of rather poor character, takes her dog out several times a day and does not clean up. A park? Or perhaps a dog run?
We asked the head of the Bolesławiec Municipal Police, Kamila Chalewicz-Pudłowska, for comment. We asked what awareness is like among Bolesławiec residents: do they know that they must clean up after their pets? “It is certainly better than it used to be,” says the Municipal Police commander. “People come to us for bags for their four-legged friends’ waste. But certainly not everyone realizes how important this issue is. Above all, it concerns children, who may find this waste in a sandbox and then become seriously ill.”
Failing to clean up after your dog can result in a fine of up to PLN 500. But this penalty does not deter everyone. Well, unless municipal police officers appear on the horizon. Then things can even become rather amusing. “Officers tell me that sometimes people who do not have waste bags with them, upon seeing municipal police officers, can panic and pick up the dog’s poop with their bare hands,” Kamila Chalewicz-Pudłowska says with a smile.
What is more, owners often let their pets roam freely. Sometimes the animal then runs away. “We intervene in such situations as well. We will catch every dog,” the commander announces. “All owners who let their dogs out to relieve themselves on their own must remember that the animal may end up in a shelter afterward.”
