The athletics games for special schools were held on Thursday at the stadium on Spółdzielcza Street. 160 athletes from eleven special centers across Lower Silesia came to Bolesławiec. “For the first time, we are hosting teams from Lubań and Lubin,” said Danuta Stefanów, head of the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół Specjalnych in Bolesławiec. The organizers were concerned about the weather, but it held up. Rain did not begin until after the events had been decided. In the Vocational Schools category, Złotoryja won ahead of Lwówek Śląski and Jelenia Góra. Students from Bolesławiec finished in fifth place. Jelenia Góra won the Primary Schools and Lower Secondary Schools category. Lwówek Śląski, Lubań and Bolesławiec followed.
The motto of this year’s competition was: “I wish to fight and win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave and courageous in my effort.” For the first time, athletes with moderate intellectual disabilities took part in the competition. Athletics events are not only fun and a way to spend free time, but also therapy, integration and an opportunity to exchange experiences among young people from different backgrounds and educational institutions.
The 8th Regional Athletics Games were held under the patronage of the Bolesławiec county head. All participants received chocolate, sweet rolls, drinks and sweets. Medals, certificates and material prizes were also handed out, including balls and table-tennis paddles. The games were enhanced by a performance from the cheerleaders of the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół Specjalnych in Bolesławiec. There was also hot pea soup with a “filling,” served from a steaming cauldron by soldiers from the Bolesławiec military unit.
The organizer of the games was the Powiatowy Zespół Szkół Specjalnych in Bolesławiec. The event was also supported by: the Bolesławiec County Office, the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center, and the Inter-School Sports Center.
