The District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica is conducting an investigation into an attack on a nurse that took place on 1 December 2014 at a hospital in Legnica. The perpetrator, who had mental disorders and was initially placed in hospital, felt well enough for procedural activities to be carried out with his participation. The man was remanded in custody.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. At the time, 47-year-old Leszek B. was on the premises of the Regional Specialist Hospital in Legnica, near the admissions room, for no specific reason. He was sitting on a bench next to a woman who, as it turned out, was unknown to him.
The 56-year-old nurse from Legnica, who was on duty at the time, became interested in the two potential patients. She approached them and asked whether they were waiting for a referral to the admissions room. Leszek B. then stood up for no reason, sprayed the nurse in the face with gas and pulled out a folding knife, with which he struck the woman repeatedly in the torso and head.
Two stab wounds were inflicted with such force that they penetrated the abdominal wall and damaged internal organs. The attacker was very quickly pulled away from the victim and subdued by hospital staff and security officers, then handed over to the police.
The victim was immediately operated on. It was a life-saving procedure.
Because Leszek B. had mental disorders, he was immediately taken to a psychiatric hospital. However, as soon as B. had been brought into a psychiatric condition allowing him to participate in the proceedings, he was detained after being discharged from the hospital—on the prosecutor’s orders—and charged on 6 December of that year. Leszek B. is suspected of attempting to murder the nurse.
The man confessed to the crime. He said that he had come to the hospital to kill, but was unable to explain why. The prosecutor filed a motion with the court for Leszek B.’s temporary detention. The court agreed and remanded the attacker in custody for three months.
The 47-year-old is staying in a closed ward of a psychiatric hospital. If he is found to have been legally sane, he could face life imprisonment.
