It is worth recalling that the former Municipal Bathing Establishments were built in two stages. In 1895, the bathhouse building was erected in the Northern Renaissance style. The second part was built in 1914–15. A tower once belonging to the city’s fortification system was incorporated into its design.

The swimming pool building is listed in the register of historic monuments, so the work is being carried out in accordance with a conservation programme agreed with the historic monuments conservator. Conservation work includes, among other things, replacing the roof tiles over the pool section; restoring the skylight over the pool hall; completing the clinker cladding; repairing damage to decorative tiles and other historic ceramic wall cladding; cleaning and securing wrought-iron railings; cleaning, impregnating and waterproofing sandstone slabs and terracotta plaques; replacing windows; cleaning and conserving the existing cast-iron columns in the cardio room; exposing and protecting against moisture the walls in the tower by the brine pool and the walls of the cardio room. In addition, the tower and cardio room will be illuminated.

– It is also worth recalling that the technical condition of the entire building turned out to be considerably worse than could have been expected. During the dismantling of the ceilings above the gymnasium, asbestos-containing boards were discovered. The ceiling was made of railway rails, and its complete dismantling and reconstruction were necessary. After the plaster was removed and exploratory openings were made, it turned out that most of the walls were cracked and some ceilings were carrying excessive loads. This made it necessary to dismantle and rebuild them – says Bolesławiec mayor Piotr Roman.

The pool equipment will include hydromassage devices, water cannons and sprinklers. The wellness room will contain, among other things, spa beds, massage beds, bathing tubs and hydromassage devices. The cardio room is planned to include, among other things, a treadmill, rowing machines, steppers, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers and exercise benches.

The historic swimming pool on Zgorzelecka Street will be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The facility will have a passenger lift and a special lift allowing a person with a disability to be lowered into the water.

The project “Restoring the Former Function of the Bathing Establishment in the Historic Swimming Pool on Zgorzelecka Street in Bolesławiec” is being implemented under the Regional Operational Programme of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship for 2007–2013. The application for funding from the ROP was preceded by extensive public consultations and the preparation of a Local Revitalisation Plan. The purpose of the consultations was to inform as many Bolesławiec residents as possible about the activities proposed under the LRP, while also gathering their opinions and identifying their preferences. As a result, priority tasks were defined. Their implementation is intended, among other things, to improve the appearance of the city-centre area, increase the city’s attractiveness, and create an appealing place to live and spend free time.
