The sculpture had been badly weathered and required renovation. Conservators removed the rust, filled in the missing sections and repainted it black. Its pedestal was also renovated. The restoration was commissioned by the City Office and carried out by employees of the Legnica-based company Ekolog.
The history of Legnica’s outdoor sculptures is very interesting and has not yet been fully documented. Zbigniew Kraska, director of the Art Gallery, recalls that three outdoor events devoted to so-called young sculpture—young, talented sculptors from Polish art academies—were held in Legnica in 1970–72. The works that were subsequently installed in many places across Legnica were the legacy of these events.
Unfortunately, some of them have not survived to the present day. It is worth noting that the authors of the outdoor works are now, in many cases, highly respected artists and university professors. As part of an educational programme involving young people, the Art Gallery inventoried these outdoor works. Their catalogue, including the authors’ names, will be published soon. Who created the work standing in front of “Parnasik”? Director Kraska explains that its author’s name will certainly be confirmed in the near future.
