Men threatening to jump from a height have climbed the Millennium Cross repeatedly. Attempts were made to bring desperate people down from the cross in April 2011 and August 2012. In February 2013, twice on the same day, two men climbed onto the cross. In 2014, one desperate man climbed onto the cross twice. Each time, an ambulance, the fire brigade, the police and a police negotiator were called to deal with the would-be suicide victims.
Back in 2013, we asked readers on our website whether the Millennium Cross should be secured against climbing. A total of 349 votes were cast in favor of securing the cross (67% of all voters).
Ten days ago, the cross was finally covered with sturdy mesh up to a height of 3.8 meters from the base, so that no one could climb it. The costs were covered by the City Hall. “Parish priest Stanisław Kusik asked me for help, and I agreed because the cost of the mesh is lower than the cost of calling the services to bring desperate people down,” Piotr Roman commented.
