At the beginning of September, we reported that a 75-year-old resident of Krępnica (Bolesławiec gmina) had gone mushroom picking and gone missing. The man got lost in the forest and spent approximately two days there. After that time, he emerged from the forest near Iłowa (Żagań County). A driver helped him; the driver knew that the police were searching for the mushroom picker. The man drove the resident of our county home.

On September 8, the second case of a mushroom picker going missing this month took place. This time, a 76-year-old resident of Legnica, who had come to Gromadka gmina with a friend, got lost in the forest. The seniors separated while picking mushrooms. The missing man did not have a mobile phone with him. He was found on September 9 in the morning.

Older people very often get lost in the forest, which is why it is worth looking after our seniors and making them aware of the dangers posed by an excursion into a forest area, even one they know well.

Police appeal: let’s take care of our safety while picking mushrooms! To avoid situations of this kind, you should:

  • inform your loved ones about your trip to the forest and tell them the area where you will be staying
  • say when you intend to return
  • take reflective items or flashlights with you; thanks to them, you will be more visible at night
  • take a mobile phone with a charged battery, which may be useful in emergency situations
  • do not take valuables with you so that you do not lose them
  • if taking children or older people with you, do not let them out of your sight
  • remember distinctive features of the area that can help you find your way back more quickly
  • if someone gets lost, becomes separated from the group and remains in the forest for an extended period, we should contact the nearest police unit. If the missing person finds the way back on their own, they should immediately notify the police that they no longer need help.
