Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet,” which premiered in 1936, is considered one of the masterpieces of the genre and is regarded on a par with the most famous classical ballets of the 19th century. Prokofiev completed the music for his work in a single summer. He breathed new life into the story, well known to everyone, of feuding families and love that leads the lovers to their graves. And although the composer himself, Sergei Prokofiev, doubted its exceptional artistic value, and Stalin summed up his work with the phrase “Chaos instead of music,” the ballet Romeo and Juliet quickly won over audiences, becoming a permanent part of history and the repertoire of all the world’s major stages.
