In September 2013, Iwona Bojko, as a juror at one of the largest and most important film festivals in Poland, the 38th Gdynia Film Festival, nominated “Ida” for the Don Quixote Award, presented each year by the Polish Federation of Film Discussion Clubs.
“At the time, I was choosing films for discussion and voted for ‘Ida’,” said Iwona Bojko. “It is an intimate film, more difficult to take in; after watching it, there are many topics worth discussing. But if someone had told me a year ago that it would be our Oscar candidate, I would not have believed them,” adds the head of the Bolesławiec cinema.
“Ida” is a beautiful and delicate film, with wonderful black-and-white cinematography, excellent music and a superb performance by Agata Kulesza. The film has also received numerous awards: the Golden Lions at the 38th Gdynia Film Festival, the FIPRESCI critics’ award in Toronto, the Warsaw Grand Prix and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Warsaw Film Festival, as well as the Main Prize at the 57th London Film Festival.
At Forum Cinema, “Ida” will be screened on Monday, 1 September, at 7:00 p.m. as part of the FDC programme.
On the following Monday evenings, we will watch “Escape from New York”. An extraordinary documentary by Michael Obert, awarded the main prize at the IDFA festival in Amsterdam, about a sentimental journey by a father and son to New York, marked by difficult choices.
“Omar”, a deeply personal film about love, friendship and betrayal in the shadow of the Israeli security wall. The Palestinian Oscar candidate and winner of the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
“The Heart of the Lion”, a moving story about overcoming racial and class prejudice, and the legendary “Empire of the Sun”. Steven Spielberg’s sweeping film is based on J.G. Ballard’s autobiographical novel and stars a very young Christian Bale. John Malkovich co-stars. This film will be screened as part of the series “Masterpieces of American Cinema. 90 Years of Warner Bros.”
