– Even before the summer season, we inspected 63 playgrounds and 59 sandboxes, in which the sand was completely replaced with new sand. The condition of both the sandboxes themselves and the equipment used for play raised no objections whatsoever – says Janina Szelągowska, director of the District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Lubin.

This summer, the Lubin sanitary inspection received not a single report concerning contaminated sand or parasitic diseases in children caused by it. – At playgrounds, there are information boards that clearly set out the rules for using sandboxes and other equipment located on the playground. However, if contamination of the sand were suspected, the manager would be responsible for carrying out an inspection and examining a sand sample – adds Janina Szelągowska.

Due to the risks caused mainly by people taking dogs and cats out, playgrounds are increasingly being fenced off, preventing animals from entering sandboxes on their own.
