The tragedy took place on Wednesday, June 25, in Warta Bolesławiecka. The chronically ill elderly woman was bitten in her own home by a dog belonging to the family. The animal mauled the woman and gnawed her lower leg down to the bone. An autopsy conducted the following day showed that the elderly woman had died from blood loss.

The woman was not alone in the house when she was dying. However... the household members were having a drinking binge. When the police arrived, the deceased woman’s son was intoxicated. Investigators say that the family members had been abusing alcohol for a long time. Since 2009, social workers from GOPS in Warta Bolesławiecka had been working with the family.

The family, including the tragically deceased woman’s son and grandson, neglected her to such an extent that in June the exhausted elderly woman was taken to hospital. At that time, the prosecutor’s office charged the household members with “exposing a person to the direct danger of loss of life or serious harm to health” (Article 160 of the Criminal Code). The legal classification of the act will now probably be changed. We will return to the subject.
