The Agora bookshop, the Municipal Office, Bolesławiecki Ośrodek Kultury-Międzynarodowe and the Museum of Ceramics invite you to the ceremony unveiling a commemorative plaque on June 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Market Square, followed by lectures Anny Bober-Tubaj and Tomasza Kuby Kozłowskiego in the BOK-MCC conference room at 5:00 p.m.

2014 is the jubilee year marking the establishment of the bookseller profession. In 1364, the first Polish university was founded, and a document was also signed that officially mentions an officer appointed to promote books.

To commemorate this date, the Coordinating Committee of Librarians, Booksellers and Publishers undertook a series of activities under the common slogan “650 years in the service of books.” The event is held under the patronage of the President of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski.

On this occasion, in Bolesławiec, thanks to the efforts of Józefina Witas, the nineteenth-century Appun publishing house, which was located where the Agora bookshop stands today, will be commemorated. During the ceremony on June 7, Anna Bober-Tubaj, director of the Museum of Ceramics, will discuss the history of the publishing house and the later history of the building in her lecture “From the Appun Bookshop to the Agora Bookshop.” Tomasz Kuba Kozłowski from Warsaw’s Dom Spotkań z Historią will discuss booksellers in the eastern borderlands in his lecture “From Altenberg to Zukerkandl.”
