Our readers wrote so beautifully about their love for their grandparents that we decided to publish their declarations. Grandmothers win their grandchildren’s hearts with sweet treats, while grandfathers have something priceless for them: time. Both are a source of support and a safe haven for grandchildren young and old. The Istotne.pl editorial team wishes all grandmothers and grandfathers health and happiness.

Grandmothers and grandfathers are people who have time and patience for their grandchildren. They are authorities whom even parents listen to, so their importance inspires admiration and a certain kind of adoration in grandchildren. Grandmothers make the best pierogi, satisfy culinary cravings and can reach everyone’s heart, in a way, through their stomach. Grandfathers can conjure toys out of nothing—things that no store carries. And they also have time to play with their grandchildren using those toys. Grandparents are not always modern, but thanks to that they know how to spend time with their grandchildren together in very interesting ways. And perhaps it is precisely because they are always there when we need them, that they are our support, and our love for them is immense. (Barbara)

I love my grandmother for the sweet-smelling buns that filled the whole house, for her smile, kind words and the tidiness she taught me. My grandfather for his wisdom and stories from times gone by, his strength and determination. (Ania, middle-school student)

Why do I love my grandmother and grandfather? For everything—for their smiles, their valuable advice about life, and those famous stories about life and what things were like in the past. For sharing tea and the delicious cake my grandmother bakes every Sunday because she knows I will come to visit her. I love it when my grandmother starts singing old Yugoslav songs, which I do not understand at all, but I still like them because I know singing brings her joy. For me, the real joy is that I can still have my grandmother by my side. And although my grandparents are very old and ill, I know I can always count on them, just as they can count on me. (Katarzyna)

I love my grandparents because thanks to them I have wonderful parents, whom they raised to be good and honest people. Because my parents passed on to me what my grandparents instilled in them throughout their lives, and I now pass it on to my son. Because they were always there for me whenever I needed them. For the ordinary days and the magical ones. I love them simply because they were there. And although they have been gone for so many years, I still love my grandparents very much. (Joanna)

I love my grandmother and grandfather for their joy of life and for constantly surprising me. When I sometimes feel I have had enough of everything, I can always count on them, no matter what happens. And that is what is wonderful. I love them because they are there, simply, in every situation. (Justyna)

Because they are like the sweetness of pistachio ice cream. Because they can be a guide, like the light of a sea lighthouse. Because when things do not work out, there is someone to whom we can open our hearts. I no longer have my grandmother and grandfather, but when I remember them, I immediately feel that even now someone is looking after me and cheering me on. (Krzysztof)

Why do we love our grandmother and grandfather? What a question—let me answer it quickly. We love them every day and on holidays too. Because every grandchild remembers their grandparents. We love them for their advice and kind words. We love them on sunny days and in rainy weather. We love them for their love, help and support. And when one day they are gone, they will always remain in our hearts. (Karolina)

For their angelic patience and love that nothing can overcome. For their care and the gift we received from them from our very first days in this world. For their wise and valuable advice and interesting stories about life. For all the time they devoted to us, because grandmother and grandfather were always present. There are days when we remember grandma’s oatmeal or grandpa smashing walnuts in his hands. They are our parents’ parents, so we can confidently give them the title and rank of “Parents squared.” (Krzysztof 2)

I am 36 years old today, and I can say that my late grandmother was always warm and understanding toward me. She told me bedtime stories and gave me my favorite sweets. She picked me up from school and fed me the most delicious soups in the world. She told me about her childhood during the war. That is why I loved her and still love her, because I miss her terribly. My grandfather Bazyli is 85 years old today. I love him for his perseverance; despite his age, he can do everything himself. It may sound funny, but he even sews his own shoes. He is a role model for me. (Sebastian)
