The celebrations of National Independence Day were attended, among others, by the mayor of Nowogrodziec Robert Relich, chairman of the Municipal Council Wilhelm Tomczuk together with councillors and representatives of the Youth Municipal Council in Nowogrodziec, as well as veterans led by retired Lieutenant Józef Komar.
The municipal celebrations began with a march featuring standard-bearer units from the square by Nowogrodziec’s Municipal Cultural and Sports Centre to the Defenders of the Homeland Monument. The ceremony was opened by GCKiS director Eliza Szwed. The mayor of Nowogrodziec then spoke, stressing that National Independence Day is an important day for every Pole—a day marking the liberation of the Homeland from the captivity imposed by the partitioning powers. The participants in the celebrations, including members of the Volunteer Fire Service, then laid wreaths at the monument.
Later, a Mass for the Homeland was held at the Church of Sts Peter and Paul, celebrated under the direction of Rev. Krzysztof Słabicki, followed by an artistic programme performed by students of the Adam Mickiewicz Lower Secondary School in Nowogrodziec.
The organisers of the ceremony were: Nowogrodziec Mayor Robert Relich, the Municipal Cultural and Sports Centre, the Union of Veterans of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners, the Youth Municipal Council and the Adam Mickiewicz Lower Secondary School.
