Grzegorz Miecugow said at a meeting in the Public Library in Bolesławiec, among other things, that the media are governed by one force: audience ratings. They alone generate profit for the media.
The journalist answered a meeting participant’s question directly: would “Szkło kontaktowe” come to the next Gliniada, as Marek Niedźwiecki had done that year with “Lista przebojów”?
“We need to contact our sales department about this,” the journalist said. “Personally, I am always happy to attend such meetings, but we are in a permanent crisis, and our visit would involve buying weather coverage from Bolesławiec on TVN; only then do we get a broadcast van.”
Miecugow did not hide the fact that what is shown on television depends solely on audience ratings, while viewers primarily demand entertainment.
“I was somewhat annoyed when Monika Olejnik invited Nelly Rokita or Andrzej Lepper to the studio,” said the creator of “Szkło kontaktowe.” “But I knew that the audience ratings would be there. Twice in the history of the Internet, something other than sex ranked first in search engines: for several weeks after September 11, 2001, it was Osama bin Laden, and several years later, AH1N1, or swine flu. Only fear draws viewers away from entertainment in the media,” the journalist added.
Although Grzegorz Miecugow does not have the highest opinion of the quality of television programs on public and private stations, he believes that, given their variety and the number of programs available from around the world, every viewer can find something for themselves. He himself discovered a U.S. television program showing sunrises.
“A brilliant thing,” the journalist said delightedly after discovering the program. “For several dozen minutes, absolutely nothing happens on the screen; I was fascinated. And I began watching television again.”
