Tukan athletes stayed busy during the summer. At the beginning of July, two of our competitors – Angelika Haniszewska and Małgorzata Szeliga – represented Poland at the World Junior Championships, held in the Czech Republic. Angelika not only qualified for the “A” final in the middle-distance race (the first 60 competitors from the heats, from a field of around 170 athletes representing 40 countries), but also secured a high 14th place. This was the highest position achieved by a Polish female competitor at these championships. Małgorzata also achieved considerable success, finishing seventh with her national-team teammates in the relay.
Seven representatives of our club competed in the accompanying Jwoc Tour events. The best performance came from the youngest of them – Stanisław Pachnik, who, in the H10 category, after six stages, lost the battle at the finish to a competitor from Prague.
In August, the runners from Iwiny took part in the Czech Advanta Cup and Magnus Orienteering Cup. Angelika performed especially well, winning both events in the women’s elite category. Małgorzata was sixth in the AC and fourth in the MOC. At the first event, Stanisław was again beaten by the aforementioned competitor from Prague, but at the second he was unbeatable. Marcin Wieczorek finished second in the Advanta, and was also second in the Magnus (H16 category). Nine-year-old Eryk Pulda made tremendous progress, finishing just off the podium in the MOC.
The Polish Club Championships were held on 13–15 September in Wrocław and Lubiąż. Stanisław confirmed his dominance in Poland in the sprint distance. Małgorzata won a bronze medal in the K20 category. In the middle-distance race, Stanisław won silver and Angelika bronze.
