The sixth-grade test is not used for recruitment, and the results of successive editions cannot be compared. It primarily helps schools assess the effectiveness of teaching. It provides teachers with guidance on which areas of knowledge and skills to work on with pupils.
For the past two years, test results concerning pupils’ mastery of information-use skills have been significantly better. This has resulted from teachers’ selection of more appropriate teaching methods.
The examination has been held in its current form for 12 years. As the curriculum reform is gradually being implemented, changes to the rules for administering the test are planned from 2015. The test will be based on requirements set out in the new core curriculum.
In 2015, the new test will be taken by pupils currently in fourth grade. They will sit the examination in two parts: in the first, they will solve tasks in Polish and mathematics, and in the second, tasks in a foreign language. The changes will concern both the quality of the tasks and the organisational format of the examination.
