The Association of the 1st Polish Armoured Division Netherlands is searching for the family of Michał Mielnik, a Polish airman who died in the Netherlands. The Polish airman’s aircraft was shot down south of the Dutch town of Zevenbergen in October 1942. All crew members were killed. Everything indicates that they are buried as unknown soldiers in the war cemetery in Bergen op Zoom.
A group of active Dutch history enthusiasts conducted an analysis of the facts based on the available documents and attempted to restore the names of the Polish airmen who are currently buried as unknown soldiers in Bergen op Zoom. The families of two of them have already been found.
If anyone from Bolesławiec has information that could help the Association in its search for the family of the fallen airman, please contact Adrian Stopa, the Association’s consul for foreign affairs and embassies, tel. 586 767 525, e-mail: a.stopa@ewz.gda.pl.
The Association of the 1st Polish Armoured Division Netherlands has existed since May 2002. Among other things, the association aims to preserve the memory of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, which fought under the command of General Stanisław Maczek.
