The Town Hall will host Dr. hab. Robert Klementowski, author of the book entitled “We are all for physical work…” – The Public Security Office in Bolesławiec (1945–1956). The meeting will take place on Friday, 26 October, at 4:00 p.m.
The publication addresses an important, yet extremely difficult subject for many residents of Bolesławiec County. People and families of people who experienced the methods used by UB officers painfully and directly are still alive today.
The book was inspired by research conducted in 2008 near the former detention facility of the Public Security Office (UB) at 5 Grunwaldzka Street. Its purpose was to verify information about the burials of victims of the torture chamber in this area and to attempt to find and identify the remains.
It was a turning point that provoked a public discussion about the activities of the UB in Bolesławiec. At the time, however, many questions and doubts concerning the issue also arose. Scientific research conducted in subsequent years by Robert Klementowski made it possible to partially resolve them.
The book “We are all for physical work…” is praised for its detachment and research objectivity. The author thoroughly analysed hundreds of files and documents on which the book was based. It is divided into two parts. The first describes the circumstances of its establishment, the changing organisational structure and staff, as well as the working methods of the county UB. The second part is an extensive analysis of various aspects of the officers’ activities.
The meeting in the Council Chamber is organised as part of the “Meetings with Contemporary History” series. Two years earlier, a scientific conference entitled “The Security Office in Bolesławiec” was dedicated to the prisoners held by the UB in Bolesławiec, and a memorial obelisk was erected.
The President of Bolesławiec, the director of the Institute of National Remembrance’s Wrocław Branch, and the director of the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec invite you to the book presentation.
