Four films presented by the Discussion Film Club in August offer a varied and interesting selection. The first screening will be the French police drama “Poliss”. A realistic portrayal of the work of a Paris police unit dealing with crimes against children. French director and actress known by the pseudonym Maiwenn shows not only the children’s tragedies, but also the devastation that this work causes in the lives and minds of police officers.

A week later, the film “The Last Love on Earth” will be screened, starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green as strangers who meet by chance and fall madly in love with each other. It will be an original combination of a sensual romance and disaster cinema.

Another offering is Martin Sulík’s latest film, “Gypsy” – an insightful, moving drama with elements of surreal humour. The film by the Slovak director, which he himself considers his most personal work, received an award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was Slovakia’s official submission in the race for an Oscar.

The August meeting with the Discussion Film Club will conclude with “Project Nim” – a documentary by James Marsh, winner of an Oscar for the film “Man on Wire”. “Project Nim” tells the story of an experiment intended to prove that a chimpanzee raised like a human could learn to communicate using language.
