The detention took place on October 14, 2026. Officers from the Criminal Department of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra, together with officers from Szklarska Poręba, took action after receiving information that a resident of Karkonosze County might possess firearms and ammunition without the required permit.
Police went to the 50-year-old man’s home. It turned out that he did indeed possess items requiring an appropriate permit.
The officers secured a total of four firearms: two long guns and two handguns. They also found several rounds of ammunition.
The man said he had found the firearms in the forest
The 50-year-old explained that he had found the firearms and ammunition while walking through the forest, using a metal detector.
Investigators say that the circumstances in which the items were found will be subject to further proceedings. The secured firearms and ammunition will be examined by an expert.
After his detention, the man was taken to a police unit and placed in police custody. Further proceedings were scheduled for today.
Up to eight years in prison
Possession of a firearm or ammunition without the required permit is punishable by up to eight years in prison. The court will decide the 50-year-old man’s further fate.
Police also remind people of the dangers they may encounter while walking in the forest, carrying out earthworks or searching with a metal detector. Particular caution is required when firearms, ammunition or objects resembling unexploded ordnance or misfired ammunition are found.
Such finds must not be touched, moved or examined independently. Even old, rusty or damaged objects may pose a serious threat.
If you come across a suspicious object, move away to a safe distance, warn other people and immediately notify the emergency services by calling 112.
