A tragic accident occurred on Thursday, October 8, after 4:00 a.m. A pedestrian died on the road from Zgorzelec toward Radomierzyce.
According to police findings, the 38-year-old man entered the road directly in front of an approaching Volkswagen. He was struck. His injuries were severe, and the man died at the scene.
The car was driven by a 42-year-old man, who was sober.
Police appeal for caution. Visibility matters
In autumn and winter, road conditions become particularly challenging. Fog, precipitation and limited visibility mean that drivers may notice a pedestrian too late to react appropriately.
Police officers remind pedestrians that after dark, outside built-up areas, they are required to use reflective elements unless they are walking on a road intended exclusively for pedestrians or on a pavement. Reflective materials can significantly increase visibility and give drivers more time to react.
A person wearing dark clothing may be visible to a driver from a distance of approximately 30 metres. For a pedestrian wearing reflective elements, this distance can increase to as much as 150 metres.
How should reflective materials be worn correctly?
Simply having a reflective item is not enough—its placement is also important. Reflective elements should be visible to drivers approaching from both directions and be within the range of car headlights.
People walking along the shoulders of roads outside built-up areas should consider wearing several reflective items or a reflective vest. This is particularly important at dawn, after dark, and during fog or precipitation.
Police also appeal to drivers to adjust their speed to the road conditions and exercise particular caution in areas where pedestrians may appear.
