What is sudden cardiac arrest?

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart stops pumping blood effectively and the body stops receiving an adequate amount of oxygen. It is a direct threat to life requiring immediate rescue action.

When SCA is suspected, quickly recognizing the situation, calling the emergency services and starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation are crucial. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, using it in accordance with the device's instructions may be an important part of providing assistance.

In such situations, time is critical. Until professional services arrive, the actions of bystanders may affect the injured person's chances.
