A brazen theft took place in Bolesławiec. The victim was an 85-year-old woman, whom a man approached. He asked the senior for the time and then unexpectedly and violently tore a gold chain with pendants from her neck.
The stolen jewellery was estimated to be worth approximately PLN 6,000. Officers from the Criminal Division of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec took up the case.
Criminal investigators worked intensively for several days to establish the identity of the person responsible for the theft. The police analysed the information and materials collected and also identified the car in which the perpetrator had left the area near the crime scene.
Further operational activities led the officers to a 36-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County. The man was arrested by Bolesławiec criminal investigators in a neighbouring county.
The police also searched the arrested man’s place of residence. They did not find the stolen chain there, but they secured marijuana. However, the officers did not end their work there and determined where the 36-year-old had sold the stolen jewellery.
As a result of further activities, the police recovered the gold chain together with a cross and a medallion. The jewellery was returned to its owner. The recovered items had enormous sentimental value for the 85-year-old.
The 36-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County confessed to committing the crime. It also emerged that he had been convicted in the past.
The man was charged with particularly brazen theft committed under recidivism conditions, as well as possession of narcotic substances. Particularly brazen theft is punishable by imprisonment of between 6 months and 8 years. Because the offence was committed under recidivism conditions, the 36-year-old could face up to 12 years in prison.
