Update
From a Reader we received photographs from the police intervention:
Two teenagers on one electric scooter caught the attention of Bolesławiec police officers. The 16-year-old riding the vehicle was carrying a passenger, even though an electric scooter is a vehicle intended for one person. However, this was not the only irregularity discovered during the inspection.
The incident occurred on Friday morning. Officers from the Bolesławiec traffic police noticed two teenagers travelling together on one electric scooter. The rider was a 16-year-old resident of Bolesławiec, while his passenger was a 17-year-old friend.
The teenagers were using the vehicle at a time when they should have been at school. The officers decided to inspect the way they were travelling on the scooter.
The 16-year-old had a bicycle card, which he showed to the officers during the inspection. This meant that he had the required authorization to ride an electric scooter. The officers also checked the vehicle’s technical condition.
It then emerged that the speed limiter had been removed from the scooter. During the measurement, the vehicle accelerated to as much as 36 km/h.
That is considerably more than the permitted speed for an electric scooter. Under the regulations, such a vehicle may travel at no more than 20 km/h.
Police also remind the public that an electric scooter is a vehicle intended for one person. This means that carrying a passenger is prohibited.
In this case, officers therefore found several violations of the regulations at once: two people riding one vehicle and travelling on a scooter from which the speed restriction had been removed. During the inspection, it turned out that the modified vehicle was capable of reaching a speed of 36 km/h.
Police appeal for caution and remind the public that regulations concerning electric scooters are primarily intended to increase the safety of their users and other road users.
