The data show that the decision to separate is usually not made hastily. The average marriage that ends in divorce lasts around 15 years.
What most often leads to the breakdown of a marriage? The dominant cause of divorce remains incompatibility of personalities, which accounts for nearly 60 percent of all marriage breakdowns. Only afterward come infidelity and alcoholism.

Who are the typical divorcees?

According to GUS data, the typical woman divorcing in 2025 was 42 years old, lived in a city and had secondary or higher education.

Women also initiate the formal ending of a relationship much more often. In two-thirds of cases, it was they who filed for divorce.
In turn, the typical divorced man was over 44 years old, lived in a city and had secondary education.

Without assigning fault—and increasingly jointly when children are involved

In the vast majority of cases, courts do not identify who was at fault for the breakdown of the marriage. As many as 85 percent of divorces end with a ruling that assigns fault to neither party.

One of the most noticeable trends of the past 25 years has been the increase in divorces among couples with very long marriages. The share of people divorcing after turning 50 and after at least 30 years of marriage more than doubled—from 4 percent in 2000 to 9 percent in 2025.
