To publicise the matter, our Reader – an outraged Native asked us. In an e-mail to the editorial office, he wrote:

In the woods – on the so-called rocks – in Łaziska, some thoughtless group of people [...] threw a little outdoor party by one of the rock formations. Such incidents are quite common there, but this time all limits were exceeded! There is rubbish everywhere (mainly bottles, cans and paper), as well as... a school desk and chairs. [...] I ask:

  • what kind of idiots (sorry, but there is no other way to describe them) did this?
  • where was the forest ranger service at the time (such parties are quite popular in this area)?
  • why has nobody cleaned it up?

I am not in favour of illegally cutting down Christmas trees or obtaining firewood, but in such cases the forest ranger service is immediately on site; when a group of partygoers scares animals and leaves behind such a dump after an all-night party, presumably, where are the rangers then? [...]

The Reader also suggested what consequences should be imposed on those littering the woods in Łaziska: “Fine one and the other 500 złoty each, or 150 hours of community service (or, preferably, both, while wearing a T-shirt saying »I littered in the forest«) and that’s it!”

Joanna Łucka, the village head of Łaziska, admits that she knows about the problem. “Five years ago, I organised a clean-up of this place,” she says. “There was so much rubbish that the children who got involved in the initiative could not cope with the amount. We took away an entire trailer-load of waste,” she adds, noting that she does not rule out another similar initiative.

“Littering in forests is a huge problem,” says forest district manager Władysław Nowak. “The forest ranger service is very active; its personnel are very well trained and prepared for the job.”

The trouble is that forest land in our county covers more than 19,000 hectares. It is difficult to keep watch over such a large area. “The fact that residents of our county litter in forests does not reflect well on them,” emphasises the head of the Bolesławiec Forest District. He adds that he will deal with the littering at the rocks in Łaziska.

We will return to this topic.
