Gerresheimer has announced the sale of its global plastic packaging business to funds managed by Apax Partners. The transaction also covered part of the operations carried out at the plant on Bolesława Chrobrego Street in Bolesławiec.
– It was not only Bolesławiec that was taken over, but the entire plastics division – explained Marek Miszczak, previously director of Gerresheimer Bolesławiec and now with Apax.
The sale covered the Primary Packaging Plastics business, which produces primary plastic packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. In Bolesławiec, the company produces, among other things, dropper bottles, applicators, droppers, closures and specialist containers used with medicines.
There will be two owners in Bolesławiec
After the transaction is completed, the plant’s operations are to be divided. The part producing plastic packaging will belong to Apax. Glass production is still to be carried out by Gerresheimer.
As director Marek Miszczak explained, Apax has become the owner of the property, including the buildings and land used by the Bolesławiec plant. Gerresheimer, which operates the glass production division, will use them under a lease agreement.
– Apax will continue plastic production in Bolesławiec – the director said.
This means that both production divisions are still expected to operate on Bolesława Chrobrego Street, but they will belong to different entities.
Transaction worth approximately €1.5 billion
Gerresheimer has signed an agreement concerning the sale of its plastics division and the American company Centor. The total value of the businesses covered by the transaction is approximately €1.5 billion.
The sale covers a total of 16 plants employing approximately 2,400 people in nine countries: 15 plants belonging to the plastic packaging division and the Centor plant in the United States.
Gerresheimer intends to use the proceeds primarily to reduce its debt and improve its financial situation.
The change will not happen immediately
The transaction still requires, among other things, the necessary approvals. The takeover of the global Primary Packaging Plastics division is to be finalized in the first half of 2027.
For now, no details have been provided regarding the formal division of the Bolesławiec company or the organizational changes associated with it. There is also no information about planned layoffs.
