The square between Asnyka, Łukasiewicza and Karola Miarki Streets has recently been named Priest Jerzy Popiełuszko Square. Bolesławiec Cultural Centre decided that the location would be suitable for organizing the Balkan Culture Festival there.
On Wednesday, the City Council was to decide whether the Balkan Culture Festival could be held at the square and whether beer could be sold during the event. However, last week, councillors from the Health Committee and the Education and Culture Committee voted by a majority not to allow beer sales at Popiełuszko Square during events held as part of the May celebrations of Bolesławiec Days. For this reason, the mayor withdrew the proposal, and councillors removed the location from the resolution that would have allowed the festival to be organized with beer sales.
“It is a shame that it will not be possible to hold it at Priest Popiełuszko Square. We will hold the festival at Piłsudski Square and in the green area behind the cultural centre,” says Iwona Bojko from BOK.
By decision of the councillors, the square was named after Priest Jerzy Popiełuszko in December last year.
