A fire broke out in an abandoned building on Friday, July 24, in Parowa, in Osiecznica Commune. The report was received at 3:32, and numerous fire service units and a police patrol were dispatched.

Firefighters from OSP Osiecznica, OSP Parowa, the Rescue and Firefighting Unit in Bolesławiec, the Military Fire Service in Świętoszów and OSP Przejęsław took part in the operation.

The fire involved an abandoned building. Thanks to the emergency services’ efficient intervention, the situation was brought under control.

The most important information is that no one was injured in the incident. Police are determining the cause and circumstances of the fire.

Fires in abandoned buildings are among the more frequently recorded interventions by the fire service. Their causes may include arson, carelessness by people staying in abandoned buildings, unattended sources of fire, or short circuits in old, damaged electrical systems, if such systems are still present in the building. During periods of high temperatures and drought, fire can also quickly spread from surrounding vegetation to abandoned buildings, or in the opposite direction.

Although abandoned buildings are uninhabited, fires in them pose a real threat. Fire can spread to neighboring buildings, forests, or fields, while the unstable structure of such buildings increases the risk of walls or roofs collapsing during firefighting operations. An additional problem is that abandoned buildings may be places where people experiencing homelessness or children and young people stay; therefore, every report of a fire in an abandoned building is treated very seriously by the emergency services.
