A dangerous discovery halted earthworks being carried out on one of Lubań’s streets. While performing the work, an excavator operator partially uncovered the stabilizer of a mortar round, after which the services were immediately notified.

Police officers arrived at the scene and confirmed that the object found was unexploded ordnance. The area was secured until the arrival of the Bomb Disposal Patrol from the Military Unit in Bolesławiec.

Due to the danger, a decision was made to evacuate residents located within approximately 200 meters of the place where the projectile was found. In total, around 40 people had to temporarily leave their homes.

After arriving at the scene, the bomb-disposal specialists recovered the unexploded ordnance. The projectile will be transported and detonated in a safe location.

Police remind the public that despite more than 80 years having passed since the end of World War II, dangerous remnants of wartime activities can still be encountered during earthworks, roadworks, and walks in forests or fields.

Officers appeal to the public not to touch, move or attempt to secure objects resembling unexploded ordnance. If possible, the location of the discovery should be marked and the Police notified as soon as possible so that they can take further action.
