Players make contact in the penalty area, someone goes down, the fans loudly demand a penalty, yet the referee clearly signals for play to continue. Some may conclude in such a situation that it is a mistake or even the ignoring of an obvious foul. But is that really the case?

Contact is not always a foul

First of all, one thing must be clearly distinguished. During a match, players are in contact with one another almost constantly. They jostle, compete shoulder to shoulder, try to shield the ball or make tackles. If every such moment were stopped with a whistle, the referee would have to interrupt the match every few seconds.

That is why referees must assess whether the contact was actually illegal and whether it gave one side an unfair advantage. The mere fact that someone has fallen on the pitch does not yet mean that an offence occurred, as you can read more about on the Fuksiarz.pl portal.

The penalty area is the most difficult place to assess

There is no denying that decisions in the penalty area are extremely difficult because they have a huge impact on the match. A penalty is one of the best opportunities to score a goal, so the referee must carefully assess every individual situation. The problem is that many clashes in the penalty area take place at high speed, and it often becomes crowded there.

Shoulder-to-shoulder play

Shoulder-to-shoulder play is normal and legal. Players competing for the ball whose conduct remains within the Laws of the Game will not cause the referee to stop the match. This is true even if one of them loses their balance and falls after such a challenge. It will not always be a foul. What matters is whether the player challenged the opponent fairly, or whether they were trying to compete for the ball while displaying unsporting behaviour.

The intention and intensity of the contact

Referees first consider the intensity of the contact itself. Accidentally catching an opponent or minor holding is not always sufficient reason to award a penalty. Especially when the attacker is clearly looking for a foul, or, conversely, reacts theatrically to the whole situation.

Is it normal for players to fall so often?

At a high tempo of play, even minor contact can upset a player's balance. In addition, attackers often try to take advantage of every situation in the penalty area, knowing how valuable a penalty is. Sometimes the contact genuinely makes the play more difficult; at other times, a player exaggerates their reaction, hoping that the referee will look favourably on them.

What about the VAR system?

VAR was introduced precisely as a response to such disputes, but it has not solved every problem. The system does help analyse replays and identify clear offences, but many situations still leave considerable room for interpretation. That is why, even after video analysis, some consider a decision obvious while others claim that the situation was controversial.
