A spectacular chase began in Pobiedna, in Lubań County, where traffic officers from the District Police Headquarters in Lubań attempted to stop the Mercedes driver for a roadside check.

When he saw the police car, the man suddenly accelerated and ignored the officers’ signals to stop. He began fleeing toward the Czech border.

The chase continued after crossing the border

The operation quickly turned into a cross-border chase. The police officers from Lubań remained in contact with the Czech services throughout, continuously providing information about the route taken by the fleeing Mercedes.

Ultimately, the driver ended his journey on the Czech side of the border. However, he had no intention of surrendering—he abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot toward nearby buildings.

The officers immediately pursued him and, after a brief chase, detained the 36-year-old man.

Three driving bans and suspected driving under the influence of drugs

The police determined that a resident of Zgorzelec County had been behind the wheel. The man was subject to as many as three active court-imposed driving bans.

That was not the end of the detained man’s problems. A preliminary test detected narcotic substances in his system, indicating that he may have been driving under their influence.

The inspection also revealed that the Mercedes had license plates assigned to another vehicle.

He will face charges for several offenses

At the time of his detention, there were also two passengers in the Mercedes.

The 36-year-old was handed over to the Czech services, where he has already been charged with driving despite an active ban. Further proceedings are being conducted by officers from the District Police Headquarters in Lubań.

For failing to stop for a roadside check and driving despite a court-imposed ban, he faces up to five years in prison. He will also be held responsible for using license plates not assigned to the vehicle he was driving.

Police: crossing the border does not guarantee impunity

The police emphasize that the case is another example of effective cooperation between the Polish and Czech services. Officers remind the public that crossing an international border does not mean avoiding criminal responsibility, while international cooperation makes it possible to effectively pursue people fleeing justice.
