The Polish Local Government Officials’ Championship was held in Wolsztyn. It was attended by 27 of the best councillors’ teams from across the country. "After the Lower Silesian Championship in Środa Śląska, where we finished first, we went to Wolsztyn determined not to give up easily," says Wiesław Słobodzian, a member of the county board and manager of the football team. "We hoped to finish high in the tournament. But few of us expected that we would become national champions," adds Wiesław Słobodzian.
The decisive matches on the way to the final were the games against Iława (qualifying round), Strzelin (round of 16) and Krotoszyn (quarter-final). While the Bolesławiec team managed to beat the first and second opponents—5:0 against Iława and 1:0 against Strzelin—the match against the players from Krotoszyn began very unluckily for our local government officials. Five minutes before the end of the match, the Bolesławiec team were losing 2:0. However, belief in success and an acceleration of the game meant that, after goals by Aleksander Wis and Zbigniew Skwarek, the councillors from our county levelled the score.
The result of the match was to be decided by a penalty shootout. Our team took the penalties flawlessly. Meanwhile, Piotr Hodowany saved Krotoszyn’s shots in excellent style. "After that match, we already knew that we were capable of beating any team in the championship," says county governor Krzysztof Konopka. "That is why, in the semi-final, we comfortably defeated last year’s champions, the team from Wieluń, 2:0, and in the final we also beat Warsaw 2:0," adds the Bolesławiec county governor.
Fans and participants in the Wolsztyn competition had plenty of praise for the new Polish champions. "According to the opinions of numerous match observers, including players from other teams, we were the team that played best, while also showing the most mature indoor football," said delighted Bolesławiec striker Janusz Kozioł after the final.
