Bolesławiec at the end of the 20th century looked completely different from today. There were no kebab shops yet, and pizzerias were only just getting started. On the other hand, there was no shortage of pubs, bars and clubs—although today you will find most of them no longer on the city map.

Clubs that disappeared

The iconic NOT club on Bankowa Street belonged to the “Konrad” mine. When the mine went under, the club disappeared too. It has not existed to this day.

A club called “Tiptop” once operated on Gdańska Street—a place where even the legendary band “Republika” performed. Today there is no trace of the club. The “Zapis” club was located on Łasicka Street. A furniture shop later operated there, but today that is gone too.

The cooperative “Relaks” club operated in the building known as “Mrówkowiec” on Łukasiewicza Street. A beauty salon later took over the name, but the club itself has been gone for a long time.

Bars that have vanished without a trace

In the very center, on 1 Maja Street—near the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help—there was a bar called “Zacisze”. It no longer exists. On Chrobrego Street, right next to the prosecutor’s office, people could eat at the “Piccolo” bar. It is no longer there. Residents of the 40-Lecia housing estate went to the “10,5” bar on Starzyńskiego Street. This venue has also passed into the past. In the Staszica housing estate, next to today’s “Lewiatan” market, there was a beer bar called “Mikrus”. It no longer exists.

Restaurants you will not find

On the left bank of the Bóbr, the best-known restaurant was “Prnjavor”. It was demolished in March 2018—one of the few cases in which we know the exact date when a venue disappeared. By the swimming pools on Spacerowa Street—where a water park stands today—there was a bistro called “Nimfa”, later known as the “Olimpia” restaurant. Neither exists anymore. Near today’s “Dino” store on “Nila” Street—formerly II Armii Wojska Polskiego—there was a restaurant called “Słoneczna”. Not a trace of the venue remains.

On the left bank of the Bóbr, in the vicinity of the Carrefour hypermarket on Zgorzelecka Street, there was a restaurant called “Bosca”, which had a bad reputation. People said it was a front for a brothel. A nightclub operated there, and it was possible to stay overnight. It no longer exists. In the 1990s, the first internet café in Bolesławiec—“BigBajt”—opened in the “Bolko” Department Store on Asnyka Street. It no longer operates.

It brings a tear to the eye when these places disappear.
