For several decades, the man has struggled with severe alcohol addiction, which destroyed the family bonds.
“He was presented as the victim, and us as the worst because we do not respond. We have serious reasons for this,” the man’s daughter wrote in a message to the editorial office.
According to the woman’s account, arguments and domestic violence occurred regularly at home. Importantly, the family felt isolated for years—according to them, despite being aware of disturbing signals coming from the apartment, the neighbors never decided to intervene. The man’s children still feel the effects of those events today, and traumatic experiences from the past have led some of them to develop serious health problems.
The man himself cut off contact with his children
The man’s children emphasize that in the past they repeatedly tried to help their father overcome his addiction and offered him support. However, each such attempt was met with firm rejection, aggression and a declaration that the man had no intention of giving up his previous lifestyle. Contact with the children was severed at the man’s explicit request. During the divorce proceedings, the court decided to limit his parental rights regarding the youngest child, citing his alcohol problem.
The apartment whose condition outraged the building’s residents is the man’s sole property. As the family points out, the father never wanted to transfer the property to any of his children, stressing that he could dispose of it as he saw fit.
A case with no simple solutions
This situation shows how complicated family conflicts can be and how easy it is to make a superficial judgment. Beneath the façade of an elderly, abandoned man, there is often a history of a years-long crisis in which relatives, looking after their own safety and mental health, were forced to set firm boundaries. This situation requires systemic support from the appropriate assistance institutions.
