An evening intervention by police officers from Chojnów, initially concerning a shoplifting incident, led to the apprehension of a man wanted to serve a several-year prison sentence.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. Officers were sent to one of the shops following a report concerning the theft of goods worth more than PLN 900. The perpetrator was apprehended by a security guard before the patrol arrived and handed over to the police.
The man was detained and taken to the Police Station in Chojnów, where procedural activities began. During the identity check, he provided his personal details, but his behavior aroused the officers’ suspicions.
The police decided to carefully verify the information provided by the detainee. To do so, they went to the residential address he had given them. There, they found a person with exactly the same personal details.
Further findings showed that the detainee had deliberately misled the officers and provided his brother’s details.
After checking police databases, the man’s true identity was established. He was a 31-year-old resident of Bolesławiec County who was wanted to serve a sentence of 3 years and 6 months in prison.
However, this may not be the end of his problems. Police officers have announced that they will analyze other shoplifting cases in the region to determine whether the detainee was also connected with those incidents.
Once all necessary procedural activities have been completed, the 31-year-old will be placed in a correctional facility, where he will serve the previously imposed prison sentence.
The case shows that attempts to mislead officers rarely succeed, and that an apparently routine intervention can lead to the apprehension of people who have long been hiding from justice.
