As Bolesławiec police officers report, unexploded ordnance and duds from the period of military operations are regularly found in the county. Such discoveries occur, among other places, during construction work, earthworks, property cleanups, forestry work, and walks in green areas.
Officers emphasize that, despite numerous warnings, there are still situations in which people who find objects resembling ammunition or unexploded ordnance attempt to pick them up, move them or transport them themselves. Such actions are extremely dangerous and may lead to an uncontrolled explosion, endangering the life and health of both the finder and people nearby.
Police remind the public that, if an object resembling unexploded ordnance or another dangerous material is found, the first priority is to keep a safe distance. The discovery must not be touched, picked up or moved. It is also important to secure the area against access by bystanders and immediately notify the emergency services by calling 112.
After a report is received, officers are sent to the scene to secure the area and assess the situation. If necessary, police bomb-disposal specialists or a bomb-disposal patrol responsible for safely removing the danger are involved.
The services point out that even old, rusty or apparently damaged objects may still contain explosive materials. Their technical condition does not mean that they pose no danger, so every case involving the discovery of a suspicious object should be treated with the utmost caution.
Police officers appeal for prudence and remind the public that an appropriate response can prevent tragedy. When an object resembling unexploded ordnance is found, the most important things are to stay safe and quickly inform the appropriate services.
