A dangerous discovery was made on Tuesday, 26 May in Lubań. While patrolling Włókiennicza Street, Municipal Police officers found an object resembling unexploded ordnance in the bed of the Siekierka River. Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, and a bomb-disposal patrol from Bolesławiec was notified.
It was established that the object was the stabilizer of a Soviet-made mortar grenade dating from World War II.
Due to the potential danger, the services decided to evacuate people in the vicinity of the location where the unexploded ordnance was found. It was also necessary to temporarily close the roads and secure the entire area.
All operations were conducted with special safety measures in place. Ultimately, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the bomb-disposal patrol retrieved the unexploded ordnance and secured it for transport. The dangerous object is to be neutralized at a military training ground.
Found something? Don’t touch it!
The services remind the public that if objects resembling unexploded ordnance are found, they must under no circumstances be touched, moved or attempted to be disarmed. The discovery should be reported to the police as soon as possible by calling the emergency number 112. The location should be secured against access by bystanders, especially children.
The police emphasize that despite the passage of many years, remnants of World War II can still pose a deadly threat. Every similar discovery requires an immediate response from the appropriate services.
