Another intervention by bomb disposal specialists from Bolesławiec in Lwówek County. This time, a dangerous discovery was made in Rakowice Wielkie, where a resident noticed an object resembling unexploded ordnance during a walk. Police officers and a bomb disposal patrol from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The incident occurred on May 6—the same day that operations related to the recovery of an aerial bomb were already underway in the county. As reported by the County Police Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski, the woman acted properly and immediately notified the services after noticing the suspicious object.
Officers from the Lwówek Śląski police headquarters, including a police officer from the Mine and Pyrotechnic Reconnaissance Group, worked at the scene. Preliminary reconnaissance confirmed that the object was an artillery shell most likely dating from World War II.
The area was secured by police officers until the bomb disposal specialists arrived. The operation was then taken over by a bomb disposal patrol from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec, whose task was to safely recover and neutralize the dangerous find.
The services once again remind the public that, despite the passage of several decades, unexploded ordnance and misfired shells still pose a deadly threat. Such objects can remain unstable and dangerous even after lying in the ground or a forest for many decades.
Police urge people who find objects resembling unexploded ordnance to:
- do not touch them,
- do not move them,
- do not attempt to secure them yourself.
Every such discovery should be reported to the services immediately by calling the emergency number 112.
