Despite its name, the Pink Moon is not actually pink – it is a popular name for the full moon in April. The name comes from the traditions of the Indigenous peoples of North America and refers to the pink phlox (a wildflower) that blooms at this time.

This phenomenon:

  • is an ordinary full moon, but with particular seasonal significance.
  • often occurs in spring, when nights are clearer.
  • may be perceived as more “magical” because of its low position above the horizon (an optical illusion effect).

Sometimes the Moon may appear slightly orange or pinkish, but this is the effect of light scattering in the atmosphere, not its actual color.
