On 1 March, Bolesławiec hosted solemn commemorations of the National Day of the Cursed Soldiers. Residents, representatives of local governments, uniformed services, schools and social organizations gathered at the Fighting Poland monument to jointly pay tribute to the heroes of the independence underground.
The ceremony had a solemn and patriotic character. After the national anthem was sung and the report of the Szare Szeregi Scout Troop in Bolesławiec was given, Bolesławiec County Starosta Tomasz Gabrysiak spoke. In his address, the Starosta emphasized that the National Day of the Cursed Soldiers is not only an opportunity to remember the dramatic fates of soldiers of the anti-communist underground, but also an expression of respect for their steadfast attitude and loyalty to values such as freedom, honor and homeland.
A roll call of remembrance was held during the ceremony, recalling the names of fallen and murdered heroes. The soldiers of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment then fired a ceremonial salute, giving the ceremony a particularly solemn character.
Bouquets of flowers were laid and candles lit at the monument. Delegations from institutions, schools and organizations paid tribute to those who, after the end of World War II, did not lay down their arms and took up the fight for Poland’s sovereignty.
